Connector Considerations

Consider the following, when using connectors in PlantSight:

SmartPlant P&ID Connector

  • A SmartPlant P&ID licence is required in order to create SmartPlant P&ID compressed (.zip) files
  • A SmartPlant P&ID licence is not required in order to run synchronizations
  • iTwin Synchronizer can be installed on any machine in order to run conversions, after the SmartPlant P&ID zip files have been created
  • Using the SmartPlant P&ID Connector is the only method available to convert SmartPlant P&ID drawings in PlantSight.

SmartPlant 3D Connector

  • A Smart 3D licence is not required for conversions from Smart 3D
  • If Smart 3D is installed with your project running, you can install the extractor and connector on any machine with Smart 3D and it can then run the conversions. For more information, refer to "PlantSight Smart 3D iModel Bridge Workshop" document on PlantSight Communities.
  • If SmartPlant 3D Connector is not installed, you can restore the Smart 3D database backup to an SQL or Oracle database, and then run the extractor. For more information, refer to "PlantSight Smart 3D iModel Bridge Workshop" document on PlantSight Communities.
  • The intermediate xml files are not reusable
  • Synchronization cannot be run on the cloud because it needs access to the Smart 3D database in order to extract the data
  • You can use vue and mdb2 files in Smart 3D.
  • Cloud synchronization is available for vue files, but they cannot be aggregated in PlantSight because there is no conversion to the OpenPlant schema and the creation of a functional staging model.

AVEVA E3D Connector

  • The E3D Bridge extractor must be installed on a machine which has E3D software and a licence of E3D will be used by the Bridge during the synchronization process
  • The E3D Bridge requires a connection to the exact E3D project to extract information from the PlantSight Synchronizer
  • The E3D Bridge also uses an AVEVA E3D Instrumentation licence
  • You can either extract the data separately and then generate the .pdmx.xml files, or you can configure the AVEVA E3D connector to extract the data from the live database during synchronization
  • If you are generating the pdmx.xml files first, the licence is released when you exit AVEVA E3D
  • If you are using the live database during the synchronization, the AVEVA E3D licence is released after the export stage for each site/zone being converted
  • The AVEVA E3D Connector does not run on the cloud.

SmartPlant Instrumentation Connector

  • The SmartPlant Instrumentation Connector must be installed on a machine with Smart Instrumentation installed
  • There is no extractor for SmartPlant Instrumentation Connector: it extracts the data and then synchronizes it with the i-model
  • Connection to the Exact SmartPlant Instrumentation Project is necessary for the bridge extractor to work correctly.
